CHAPTER 17

Ineeded to figure out how I was going to handle this. Should I write my report with pictures and email it to Georgia. Let her blow up first. Or should I call her and then send the information?

Aunt Georgia was not an easy person to handle. I needed to think. A trip to the old factory sounded like a good plan. I hadn't been very old—at the most five or six—when it closed for good. Arie and I would come here to play every so often. The Bracken Family Trust owned the property. In fact, except for the Jasmine house and the Truck Stop, we owned all of Abracadabra. How was that going to work? Jenna renting from Arie. He managed the properties.

Driving down the old service road to the Abracadabra Magic Factory, dodging potholes big enough to swallow a racehorse, I concluded my rented Mercedes wasn't exactly created for the task, but it made it. I needed to get my own car—scratch that. I needed to bite the bullet and get some sort of truck and car crossover. I was now parked in the parking lot. To be on the safe side, in case I stumbled and broke an ankle or something, I sent a text to Vito and Arie telling them my location and climbed from my car.

Many years later, the factory buildings were all still standing—five total, all connected by causeways. I always wondered why they needed so many buildings. How many magic items were there?

The bones of the buildings seemed to all be in decent shape. The brick didn't appear to be crumbling. Why had they made these buildings out of brick? Cement blocks would have been cheaper. A giant white marble rabbit stood inside a four-foot-high black top hat in front of the main entrance. It wore a tux jacket with tails. He greeted all who entered. In one hand, he held a white-tipped cane. Standing at twelve-foot high and eight feet wide, he created the aura of grandness before a visitor opened the door. Not quite magic, but grandness. No expense had been spared on the grand hall. The metal embossed 6-inch ceiling tiles had been painted white, and every tenth one was black with a rabbit stamped on the tile. Gold filigree figurines adorned the white walls at regular intervals. One massive and two smaller chandeliers hung from the ceiling. I was amazed scrappers hadn't gutted this place. Not even a broken window in the building. Interesting.

The heels of my red suede boots clicked and echoed as I walked the grand hall. My subconscious mission had been to analyze this building and consider the probability of turning it into something modern. My spirit didn't want to think. It wanted to absorb the vibes.

Wisdom floated in the air. That was an odd thought for a magic factory. Granted, sleight of hand was not easy, but this was different. The place felt very grounded. Heavy but measured. As if great men had walked these halls wrestling enormous burdens and great wisdom.
